The Maryland Center for Civic Education is part of the CIVITAS: An International Education Exchange Program administered by the Center for Civic Education, Calabasas, California. Maryland, Oregon, and California are partnered with the Ministry of Education and Sport, Republic of Croatia.

Program impact:

  • Approximately 10 Croatian and U. S. participants in annual exchange visit

  • Approximately 140 Croatian and U. S. teachers annually

  • Approximately 1,200 Croatian and U. S. students annually
Program highlights:
  • Fourth Annual Civitas Summer Seminar 2000 was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, in conjunction with the second annual Project Citzien showcase

  • Translation, adaption, and implementation of We the People...Project Citizen as a national student academic competition and showcase for upper elementary students focusing on public policy. To date, 30,000 students have received Croatian translations of Project Citizen

  • Develpment of the Croatian Comparative Lessons for Democracy is currently underway
